The Work of:
Peter
Hurd (1904-1984)
Gallery II: The War
Sketches
Peter Hurd was a War Correspondent for Life Magazine during World War II. He traveled through Ascension Island, Europe, Arabia, India, Africa, British Guyana- many more countries, and most continents throughout the war. The magic of these sketches is that they literally are done on the fly. Hurd did not use photography, all of these were done at the location, at the moment they occured. They are immediate, deft, and deeply human impressions he made for possible future use. In his portrait sketches, his charm and personality made an immediate connection with his five-minute models, whether military personel, or natives of a foreign country speaking a language he did not know. The names of subjects were often scribbled somewhere on the page.
